Abstract

Pension provision is an important component of the social protection system and one of the key instruments of the state's socio-economic policy. The relevance of the study is determined by worsening demographic challenges, a decline in the economically active population, increasing inflationary pressures, and the instability of Ukraine’s economic development. The purpose of the study is to identify and quantitatively assess the key factors affecting pension payments in Ukraine using econometric modeling methods. The information base of the study comprises statistical data for Ukraine covering the period 2000–2024, including the average pension, average wage, demographic dependency ratio, and inflation rate. The impact of the 2017 pension reform is captured by means of a dummy variable. The research methodology is based on the construction and comparative analysis of two specifications of multiple regression models that account for the influence of macroeconomic, demographic, and institutional factors on the dynamics of pension payments. The first model includes the average wage, demographic dependency ratio, inflation rate, and a dummy variable representing the 2017 pension reform. To verify the reliability of the parameter estimates, multicollinearity among the explanatory variables was examined using the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) and the pairwise correlation matrix. For comparison with the baseline specification, a logarithmic model with a lag structure was developed. The results indicate that both models are statistically significant and adequately describe the processes under study. The comparative analysis showed that, in the logarithmic model, the statistically significant effect of the average wage on pension payments became stronger, confirming the decisive role of the labor market and household income dynamics in shaping the pension system. The practical significance of the findings lies in the possibility of using the developed models to assess the impact of socio-economic factors on pension payments, forecast their dynamics, and provide analytical support for decision-making in the field of pension policy.
